Electric Vehicle Charging
Electric vehicles are growing in popularity year on year, with the latest figures suggesting that around 135,000 are currently on UK roads. This increase in popularity means an growing number of owners are looking to have charging facilities on their premises – and there are often incentives for doing so.
As well as being NICEIC approved electrical contractors, the team at Simat have the experience, accreditations and skills needed to install electric vehicle charging points – and can offer a wide range of solutions.
Do you need an electrical vehicle charging point?
There’s sometimes confusion around electric vehicle charging points and whether or not your choice of electric car would require one. To answer the question of whether or not you would require a charging point you should consider which of the following types of electric car you have or are considering purchasing/leasing:
- A hybrid (HEV)
- A plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
- An electric vehicle (EV)
Of the three possibilities, only plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles require charging points – as hybrids (HEVs) recharge their battery while the conventional fuel engine is running.

Grants available for electric vehicle charging points
The government offers grants as an incentive for people to use electric and plug in hybrid vehicles. They do this through the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and the grant could represent up to 75% of the total cost of fitting a charging point at your home.
As such, the price of fitting a charging point in your home could be significantly less than you initially think. Again, if you’d like more information about OLEV grants and the specific requirements that surround them, we’d be delighted to talk to you in more detail.
